Veteran Farmer Risk Management Education Tutorials

For new farmers and ranchers, understanding and managing risk is a critical element to running a successful operation. As part of our efforts to help veteran farmers better understand risk management and the tools and resources available for managing risk, we have produced a series of short tutorials to present and cover various topics related to risk management and crop insurance. Links to these tutorials along with a brief summary of their content are provided below.

  • Module 1: Managing Risk

    This module provides and overview of the many risks involved in farming, the ways to manage these risks, and discusses some of the common tools utilized to transfer or manage this risk.

  • Module 2: What is Crop Insurance

    A common method in dealing with risk is to transfer a portion of your risk to an insurance company. This module discusses mitigating the risk of lost or reduced production and income through risk transfer using the Federal crop insurance program.

  • Module 3: Beginning Farmer-Rancher / Veteran Farmer-Rancher / Limited-Resource Farmer-Rancher Benefits

    Beginning, Veteran and Limited-Resource producers can be eligible for additional subsidies and benefits. This tutorial provides an overview of potential benefits and describes requirements for eligibility.

  • Module 4: Whole Farm Revenue / Micro Farm

    This module provides an overview of the Whole Farm Revenue Protection and Micro Farm Programs. Whole Farm Revenue Protection covers all commodities produced on a farm under a single insurance policy. Micro Farm is a more streamlined and accessible version of Whole Farm designed for small producers.

  • Module 5: Apiculture / Pasture, Rangeland, & Forage Programs

    This module provides an overview of how the Federal Apiculture Program and the Pasture, Rangeland, and Forage Program operate. Apiculture and PRF both are classified as rainfall index policies which provide coverage for a lack of rainfall in a given grid during a given timeframe.

  • Module 6: Actual Production History Program

    This module provides an overview of the Actual Production History (APH) plan of insurance The APH program protects against a loss of production due to naturally occurring perils based on a producers Approved Yield, which is on the producer’s historic yields for the most recent consecutive 4 to 10 crop years.

  • Module 7: Livestock Programs

    Producers have access to insurance programs for different livestock. This module provides an overview of various programs available for livestock and examples of how those livestock programs operate.

  • Module 8: Resources

    This module provide an overview of resources available to producers to explore and understand crop insurance programs and policies. Resources covered include tools for locating a crop insurance agent, crop insurance policies and procedures, cost estimators, fact sheets and other valuable information.
